Shadows

Recorded Recorded performance (3:15), 2018

Based on the film Battle of Algiers, this piece challenges centuries of colonial discourse denoting the North African female as being oppressed through a performance of shadows - an interaction between a female of the diaspora and the women who were vital to Algerian independence.

The initial piece is in form of a recorded performance against projection. Physical exhibition and monopolisation alongside other, rather ‘provocative’ within a Muslim context, acts all working as metaphors. The piece so far consists of a female performer, although the work has been developing towards a live performance, which will include the artist himself, touching upon different elements of the marginalised, post-colonial female and queer bodies, as well as the contrast between colonialism and terrorism.
